Dylan Cudahy - Site Director, Tysons One Life & Oakmont High Performance & Age Group Director

dylan@machineaquatics.com

I’m Dylan Cudahy, and I’ve been coaching with Machine Aquatics for the past three years—but my connection to this team goes way back. I actually swam with Machine for six years (after starting with the Virginia Gators) and still hold team records in the Long Course 400 IM and 1500 freestyle. Safe to say, swimming has been a big part of my life for a long time. I believe in building swimmers up for long-term success—focusing on discipline, attention to detail, and loving the process. For me, it’s never just about the yards or the clock. It’s about the effort you bring and the intention behind what you do every day. That’s where real growth happens. I graduated from the University of Virginia in 2021, where I studied systems engineering and environmental science. Even with that background, I probably spend more time thinking about swimming than I should—but I can’t help it. I’ve been coaching in one way or another since high school, and there’s nothing better than seeing a swimmer’s hard work pay off. Watching athletes chase down their goals and gain confidence along the way is what keeps me coming back to the pool every day.

He served 25 years as the Pre-Senior Sea Devil coach, 10 years as the Machine Aquatics Head Age-Group coach and 20 years coaching summer league. As Director of Aquatics at the Madeira School for 31 years, he coached his teams to 6 state championships. He received the 2007 David H Robertson Award for Coaching Excellence from the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association.

Rod lives in Sterling, VA with his lovely wife Gina and loves to travel and dance. He is also a Master swimmer who loves open water swimming.

James Walsh - Senior Group & High School Prep Coach

james@machineaquatics.com

I have over two years of coaching experience with Machine Aquatics and the Burke Centre Stingers, along with more than a decade of experience as a swim instructor. My coaching philosophy emphasizes technique and tempo, focusing on helping athletes understand the “why” behind every drill and exercise rather than just the “how.” I believe this approach not only builds skills but also fosters a deeper connection to the sport.

I earned dual Bachelor’s degrees in History and Film/Game Design from the University of Utah, and I hold a Master’s degree in Digital Public History from George Mason University. My educational background allows me to communicate complex concepts with clarity and purpose.

Outside of coaching, I enjoy hiking, swimming, visiting museums and theaters, and staying active through futsal games and community pickups. I’m passionate about continuous learning and community involvement, both in and out of the pool.
