Dan Haines, Head Site Coach

danh@machineaquatics.com

A competitive swimmer from age 6 through my late 20s, I competed in summer league, YMCA, AAU/USAS, high school, college and Open Water. I was also a 6 year cross country and 3 year track athlete, and briefly a student of dance.

My coaching career began as a summer league assistant in 1983 at the age of 15. At 17 I was hired for my first head coaching position. Since then I've worked for teams large and small, coaching all ages and ability levels. I have also specialized in open water swimming, drawing on my own experience in surf rescue and open water racing.

I've coached USAS programs in the Middle Atlantic, Potomac Valley and Virginia Swimming LSC’s, including a couple I started, Sussex Family YMCA in Rehoboth Beach, DE and Flying Gull Aquatic Club in Potomac Valley Swimming. I have also developed and operated swim schools, including Montgomery County MD’s SwiMontgomery program and most recently H2okie Aquatics Stroke School in Blacksburg, VA. For a period of 4 years I worked in both competitive swimming and commercial architecture as an intern for Bignell Watkins Hasser Architects P.C. in Annapolis MD.

My coaching philosophy can best be described as holistic and I am the beneficiary of collaboration with some of the best coaches to ever walk the pool deck. My intention is to provide a path for swimmers of all ability levels to enjoy the sport, while at the same time managing a program capable of producing athletes at the highest levels. I strive for an imaginative and fun learning environment, emphasize smart training and focus on the realization of individual potential. To me the most important objective of coaching youth sports is to promote the health and wellness of children with the passion, humility and equanimity required to impart both extrinsic and intrinsic values of sport.

My hobbies include mountain biking, hiking, skiing, graphic design, disc golfing and music. In 1991 I bicycled from Seattle to Los Angeles to Dover, DE, spanning 4500 miles. In 1995 I reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. I live with my wife Katie, who is a health coach and son Ben. We also have a dog and 2 cats who graciously let us live with them.

Currently I am the head site coach of our UMD site in College Park, MD, where I work as a primary coach with the senior elite levels and secondary coach to the age group levels.

Austin Rider

austin@machineaquatics.com

Hi everyone! My name is Austin Rider and I coach at the University of Maryland site. I started swimming at the age of 6 with the Kingston Chase Fighters in Herndon, VA, swimming there for 11 seasons before moving to the Four Seasons Tidal Waves (also in Herndon) for my last 2 seasons. My coaching career started as a junior coach with Kingston Chase and I really got into coaching with Four Seasons, where I worked as an assistant during my final 2 swim seasons before taking over as head coach for the next 3 years after graduating off the team.

Following my graduation from James Madison University and my final season with the Tidal Waves, I accepted a full-time role in the fall of 2019 as the primary Seniors and Gears coach with Machine at UMD. I have had an amazing time coaching with Machine and have also helped coach the Adelphi Dolphins summer team for the past three years, and am excited to move into a larger role as the primary HP coach at UMD this season!

I am a full-time teacher in Prince George’s County, Maryland where I teach Advanced Placement World History and Modern World History. I have been teaching since 1998 and I thoroughly enjoy teaching. I started coaching summer league in 1990 and soon found myself coaching year-round in Potomac Valley in 1992. In 1997, I served as an Assistant Coach with the PVS Zone Team and I served as an Assistant Coach with a PVS National Age Group Camp. This will by my 29th year coaching in Potomac Valley and my 8th with Machine Aquatics at the University of Maryland where I will primarily be coaching the High-Performance Age Groups. I’m looking forward to another exciting year as a member of the Machine Aquatics team and family.

Hi there! My name is Maddie, and I am so excited to be beginning my coaching journey with Machine! I was born in the DMV area but spent most of my childhood in Northern California. This is where I found my love for swimming and competing on a swim team, competing on my home team for eleven years! As a swimmer, I placed first two years in a row in the county-wide swim competition and am a part of several relay records that still stand today. My favorite strokes are freestyle and butterfly 😊 I began my coaching career on that team and have been teaching people of all ages how to swim for almost ten years. I recently graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.A. with Honors in History and two minors (Secondary Education/Spanish), and am on track to complete a Masters in Secondary Education in May 2024. My goals for post-grad are to teach middle school Social Studies either in Maryland or Virginia! I am so excited to meet all of you, and I look forward to seeing you on deck soon!
